Cefaclor is a semi-synthetic oral antibiotic produced by Eli Lilly under the brand name Ceclor. Cefaclor belongs to the second generation cephalosporin antibiotic family. Cefaclor stops the growth and multiplication of bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis and these cell wall protects them from their immediate environment and helps in keeping the contents of the bacteria intact, so if the cell wall is unable to protect the bacteria, it dies. Cefaclor is a very effective antibiotic against many microorganisms such as staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenza, E. coli and Streptococcus pneumonia. Cefaclor is a broad-spectrum antibiotic because it has the ability to destroy many bacterial cells including Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. The drug is used in the treatment of many bacterial infections such as pneumonia and infections of the ears pneumonia and infections of the ears, lungs, throat, urinary tract infections and skin infections. Cefaclor may be used together with another antibiotic which is known as combination therapy. There are three major types of cefaclor and they are cefaclor capsule, cefaclor tablets extended-release (long-acting), and cefaclor suspension, and they are all administered orally. Cefaclor dosage

Cefaclor dose includes cefaclor 250mg, cefaclor 500mg, and 1 g doses and it is well absorbed after administration whether it is taken with or without food. You are to take this medication exactly as prescribed by the physician. Do not take the medication for longer than recommended by your doctor or in a larger amount. Cefaclor capsule and suspension are usually taken with or without food every 8 or 12 hours while cefaclor tablet is usually taken within 1 hour of eating a meal every 12 hours (twice a day) for 7 to 10 days. Make sure you complete the cefaclor dose for the entire time prescribed by your healthcare personnel. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated, but do not stop taking your medication because if you stop taking cefaclor too soon or skip doses, your infection may not be completely treated and the bacteria may become resistant to the antibiotics. Take cefaclor at around the same times every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label given by the healthcare personnel carefully.

Store cefaclor tablets and capsules at room temperature completely away from moisture and heat and store cefaclor oral suspension in the refrigerator, but do not allow it to freeze and throw away any unused cefaclor that is older than 14 days.


Cefaclor should not be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Cefaclor should be completely avoided if there is a history of immediate hypersensitivity reaction and renal impairment.
