What is Ezetimibe?

Ezetimibe brings down the quantity of cholesterol or other sterols in in the diet,which get absorbed by your body. Ezetimibe is used in combination with low cholesterol and low fat diet to treat high cholesterol, high blood sitosterol and campesterol. Ezetimibe is sometimes used in combination with other cholesterol lowering drugs. Ezetimibe may have several other uses which are not mentioned above.

Ezetimibe may be combined with the following drugs:

  • Fenofibrate (lipofen, tricor, antara, triglide)
  • Statin drugs like- simvastatin, lovastatin, pravastatin, atorvastatin and fluvastatin

If you get symptoms like muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have fever, unusual tiredness, and dark colored urine, immediately inform your doctor as it may be due to Ezetimibe use. Ezetimibe sometimes causes renal failure resulting from muscle tissue breakdown.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Ezetimibe?

If you are allergic to ezetimibe or have hepatic disease, you must not take Zerit.You may require the dosage adjustments or certain tests to use Zerit, if you have any of the below mentioned conditions:

  • Renal disorder
  • Thyroid disorder

Use hormonal or steroid drugs, contraceptive pills.If you get symptoms like muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have fever, unusual tiredness, and dark colored urine, immediately inform your doctor as it may be due to Ezetimibe use. Ezetimibe sometimes causes renal failure resulting from muscle tissue breakdown.FDA pregnancy category C. fetal adverse effects of Ezetimibe are unknown. Pregnant women or those who are planning to conceive must always inform their doctor about their pregnancy status. Excretion of Ezetimibe into breast milk is not known. Adverse effects in nursing infants of mothers exposed to Ezetimibe are also unknown. Nursing mothers who are taking Ezetimibe must consult their doctor before starting to breast feed.Older adults are more prone to developing adverse effects of Ezetimibe.

Ezetimibe side effects

Signs of Ezetimibe allergic reaction may be swelling on face, lips, tongue, throat or hives, breathing problem. Seek immediate medical help if you experience any of the below mentioned symptoms and signs:

  • Malaise, muscle tenderness or pain
  • Stomachache, nausea, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay colored stools, icterus
  • Chest pain
  • Symptoms of pancreatitis like sever upper stomachache spreading to the back, unusual muscle weakness, pain, tenderness
  • chest pain
  • sore throat, fever and headache with red or purple skin rash that spreads with blistering and peeling of skin Less serious side effects of Ezetimibe may be:
  • numbness or tingling
  • mild stomach pain, diarrhea;
  • fatigue
  • headache;
  • dizziness;
  • depression
  • runny or stuffy nose, cold symptoms;
  • joint pain, back pain, cough.

The above mentioned list of side effects is not complete. You may experience other signs and symptoms of Ezetimibe side effects, so you must consult your doctor if you experience anything unusual.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss any dose you can take it when you remember but if it’s time for the next dose do not take double dose at single time. Continue the rest of the dosages at regular intervals.

What happens if I overdose?

Ezetimibe overdose is not life threatening. You must seek immediate medical advice on taking the overdose.

What should I avoid?

Avoid fried foods. Follow a cholesterol-lowering diet plan under the guidance of professional dietician.Avoid drinking alcohol as it increases your risk of liver damage by increasing levels of LDLs.

How should I take Ezetimibe?

You must follow the prescription instructions and take the medicine as prescribed by your doctor. Do not alter the dosage or duration of medication without seeking medical advice.Generally one dosage of Ezetimibe is taken each day. Ezetimibe may be taken empty stomach.
