What is Nitrofurantoin?

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic used in the treatment to prevent the bacterial infection onto the body.

Nitrofurantoin is effective drug also taken to treat urinary tract infections.

Important information

Nitrofurantoin should be avoided in cases if you have any kidney disorder, urination infection or any liver problem or suffered from jaundice in past because of nitrofurantoin. Avoid taking nitrofurantoin in third trimester of pregnancy

Before taking this medicine

Do not consume Nitrofurantoin:

  • if you received an allergy from nitrofurantoin
  • kidney disorder
  • liver problem
  • history of jaundice
  • urination problem
  • in last weeks of pregnancy about 2 to 4 weeks

  • liver or kidney disease;
  • diabetes;
  • anemia;
  • vitamin B deficiency;
  • an electrolyte imbalance or;
  • glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency; or

According to FDA pregnancy catergory B, Nitrofurantoin is not harmful for fetus during early stages of pregnancy. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant during treatment

Nitrofurantoin can enters into the human milk and may harm the neonate. Do not breast feed your baby during the treatment of Nitrofurantoin.

Usage of Nitrofurantoin is prohibited for child below one month old.

Nitrofurantoin side effects

Even though the intake of Nitrofurantoin is tolerable for the patient but there are situations when an emergency medical help may be needed. These include difficulty breathing, swelling on lips, throat, tongue or face.

Call your doctor immediately in case you find following symptoms:

  • Drowsiness
  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling short of breath
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Severe pain in lower back
  • Rapid weight gain
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Jaundice
  • Dark urine
  • Urinating less than normal
  • Severe pain in upper stomach

Other Side Effects:

  • Mild skin rash
  • Fever
  • Throat
  • Flu symptoms
  • Itching
  • Confusion
  • Back pain

There are certain drugs that may interact with Nitrofurantoin, including over-the-counter medicines, prescription, herbal products, and vitamins. Hence it is important to meet your doctor and inform about the same to avoid the risk of side effects.

What happens if I miss a dose?

In case you miss a dose then take the skipped dose as soon as remembers. But the missed dose should only be taken if the next dose is not scheduled to avoid the side effects of overdose.

What should I avoid while taking Nitrofurantoin?

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic used to treat the fungal infections. It may cause diarrhea, that might be an indication of new infection. If you find bloody stools or watery stools, inform your doctor about the symptoms. Do not take any medications to stop the diarrhea on your own.

Avoid taking antacids unless your doctor has not recommended you. As some antacids may interact with the drug and stop its to absorb into the body.

How should I take Nitrofurantoin?

Follow doctor’s guidance and every instruction on prescription manual while using Nitrofurantoin. Do not increase or decrease the dosage amount on your own. Ask your doctor in case you have any query.

Consume Nitrofurantoin with food.

Shake the bottle of liquid marcobid well before use. Measure the dosage of the drug with measuring cup comes with the drug. if you did not get the measuring cup with the medicine, ask from your pharmacist

You can mix your liquid dosage with milk, juice or water for taste but have it whole in one attempt and do not keep the mixture for future.

Use the drug as recommended by your doctor and for the same period. You might feel that you are well and your symptoms improved but it may reappear if you skip or stop the drug in between the treatment.

Nitrofurantoin is NOT a treatment for viral infections such as cold or flu.

Nitrofurantoin is typically given for up to 3 days when lab tests indicates that the infection has removed.

Nitrofurantoin for Bladder Infection: my pharmacist recommended the drug with juice. I took it but don’t know this is first antibiotic which is really not worked on me. I was feeling sleepy all the day even I felt nauseated and tried. Not a good drug to follow.
